This past Saturday, October 26, Indian River County witnessed a powerful display of unity and resilience at United Way’s 29th Annual Day of Caring, sponsored by Publix Super Markets. Against a backdrop of recent challenges, including the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, over 500 volunteers came together to complete 49 projects across the county, showcasing their dedication to strengthening the community and offering support to those in need.
“This year’s Day of Caring was a shining reminder of the heart and spirit of Indian River County,” said Meredith Egan, United Way’s Chief Executive Officer. “Facing storm recovery, volunteers showed up with energy and care, transforming challenges into hope and camaraderie. It wasn’t just about service; it was a celebration of our community’s resilience.”
Volunteer groups from various backgrounds and industries, including Merrill Lynch, Youth Guidance Mentoring Academy, Seacoast Bank, Cleveland Clinic and Indian River County Hospital District, kicked off the day at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex with a breakfast sponsored by McDonald’s local owners Joe and MaryAnn Conrado and Jeremy Odom, and refreshments from Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice. Energized by routines led by VBHS Cheer Squad and a warm-up session by TBLB Fitness, volunteers set out to serve at nonprofit sites like Boys and Girls Clubs of Indian River County, Literacy Services, Our Father’s Table Soup Kitchen, Team Success, and many others.
Projects for the day included painting, trimming, organizing, assembling early learning literacy kits, and crafting heartfelt greeting cards. We are grateful to Publix Super Markets, Gould Cooksey Fennell, Dean, Mead, Minton and Moore, PNC Bank, and YPTC, whose contributions made this impactful event possible. Thanks to PNC Bank’s Grow Up Great grant, we were also able to assemble 287 early learning kits, which will support child development for children from infancy through age five at RCMA and the Indian River County Healthy Start Coalition. Additionally, FPL proudly sponsored our newest Born Learning Trail at Easy Street Park in Sebastian enhancing early learning opportunities for families in our community.
This year’s event underscored United Way’s ongoing commitment to mobilizing resources and support for the entire community. With a heightened focus on disaster recovery from Hurricane Milton, United Way remains steadfast in its mission to ensure stability and resilience through year-round community efforts.
