Volunteer-powered VITA program saves local families money – and stress – during tax season

VERO BEACH, May 27, 2025 – United Way of Indian River County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program wrapped up another successful season, returning more than $1.94 million in tax refunds to local families.

This year, 2,484 individuals and families received free, IRS-certified tax preparation services through the program. With an average annual income of just $28,288, clients walked away with an average refund of $1,225—providing a much-needed financial boost to households that need it most.

In addition to direct refunds, VITA helped clients claim over $590,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits, more than $138,000 in Child Tax Credits, and upwards of $28,000 in Education Credits. By avoiding paid preparer fees—estimated at $220 per return—clients saved an additional $546,480 collectively.

“This program is a lifeline,” said Meredith Egan, CEO of United Way of Indian River County. “It puts money back into the hands of working families and helps them stay afloat or even get ahead.”

The program’s success was made possible by 37 trained volunteers who logged over 3,789 hours of service throughout the season. Their commitment to helping others is at the heart of VITA’s mission and impact.

Clients praised the experience in post-season surveys, noting the warmth and professionalism of the volunteers. One participant shared, “Your volunteers are wonderful, kind, helpful and concerned. They are to be commended for their service—especially to people like me.” Another wrote, “Using VITA makes tax preparation very easy, affordable and everyone working there is extremely nice. We have always been extremely satisfied with the professionals who have filed our taxes.

United Way’s VITA program is offered annually during tax season and continues to be a vital resource for Indian River County. To learn more or support this effort, visit UnitedWayIRC.org/VITA.
