VERO BEACH, September 10, 2025 – United Way of Indian River County is calling on local high school students to step up, get involved, and volunteer with purpose through UPSTARTERS – a youth-led program designed to empower 9th-12th graders to organize drives, lead projects, and connect with nonprofits.

The program kicks off with its first meeting on Tuesday, September 16, from 3:15 PM – 4:30 PM at the United Way Center Community Room. Snacks will be provided.

UPSTARTERS offers students hands-on opportunities to support local causes, from assisting at food distributions and beach cleanups to sorting donations at thrift stores. Members also gain valuable leadership and teamwork experience while earning community service hours required for graduation.

“UPSTARTERS is more than just a way to earn hours – it’s about giving students the tools to create meaningful change in their community,” said Meredith Egan, Chief Executive Officer of United Way of Indian River County. “These young leaders are the next generation of changemakers, and we’re here to help them grow.”

Monthly meetings are held every third Tuesday at United Way. Students will learn about upcoming service opportunities and work alongside peers to make a positive difference.

Joining UPSTARTERS comes with a wide range of benefits. Students can earn valuable community service hours while also building leadership, teamwork, and organizational skills that will serve them well beyond high school. The program provides meaningful volunteer experience that strengthens college and job applications, along with opportunities to meet new friends and network with local professionals. Participants may also request letters of recommendation, further supporting their future academic or career goals.

Participation is open to all high school students in grades 9-12. Parental/guardian consent is required for all students under 18.
