United Way of Indian River County is looking for dedicated volunteers to assist with free tax preparation for local individuals and families with low to moderate incomes through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. VITA services will be available at multiple locations across Indian River County, helping community members access valuable tax credits without costly preparation fees.
Joining as a VITA volunteer comes with great benefits: free IRS training and materials to help you build a valuable skill, flexible scheduling options, ongoing support, and even Continuing Education Credits for eligible participants. Volunteers also receive a Certificate of Recognition and Letter of Appreciation from the IRS—plus, the chance to make a real difference right here in our community.
“These volunteers make a remarkable difference for families and individuals in need, and we couldn’t be prouder of their dedication,” said Meredith Egan, Chief Executive Officer. “Last season, they collectively contributed over 2,848 hours to our community—a true testament to their commitment. As we look to the coming year, we’re calling on even more passionate individuals to join us in this rewarding work. If you want to make a meaningful impact, we would love to welcome you to the team. Together, we can continue to make a powerful difference in Indian River County.”
Whether you’re retired, a student, or simply interested in giving back, all backgrounds are welcome! Available roles include tax preparers, greeters, clerical assistants, and interpreters. No experience? No problem. The tax software is intuitive, guiding you every step of the way, and all volunteers are protected under the Volunteer Protection Act.
New volunteers are encouraged to participate in a three-day training at the United Way Center on January 15, 17 and 18th from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Certified volunteers should be able to commit 4–8 hours per week from mid-January through April 2025.
