Familywize Discount Prescription Cards

Staring in July 2008, the United Way partnered with the Familywize program to distribute, free of charge, discount prescription cards to the residents of Indian River County. The FamilyWize card can save participants about 30 percent on drug purchases, said Michael Kint United Way CEO. Prescription drugs "are a concern for just about everyone across the board in one way or another, and this is a great way of making sure you have a level playing field for anyone who needs to get a hold of these," Kint said. The program does not have any age or income restrictions, and people with insurance can benefit from the program if they need a prescription that isn't covered, Kint said. "For the most part, you just have to have the card. You can bring it in. You show it to them, and it can be used by anybody, even if you have insurance," he said. "Let's say you're taking a drug for allergies and your insurance doesn't cover that specific pharmaceutical; you can use this card to get a reduced rate on that." Discount cards can be obtained from the United Way office at 1836 14th Avenue in downtown Vero Beach during business hours. People with Internet access can also print a card by visiting the website at www.FamilyWize.com as well as look up drug prices and the list of participating pharmacies. Most pharmacies across the U.S. honor the cards and there is no cost for the card nor eligibility requirements.

"You are my Sunshine"

Cassidy Sunshine is ready for kindergarten. Shea's excited and nervous, and so are her parents. But, with your help, they've been preparing for this moment for a long time. Five years ago, Cassidy was born with a hearing disability. When she was born, it was really scary, we knew something was wrong right away, says her dad. I kept thinking how is she going to hear me tell her I love you explained her mom. But the help we've received from that moment on has been just tremendous. The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, a United Way partner agency, outfitted Cassidy with a special hearing aid designed like a headband enabling her to listen, learn, talk and hit all the milestones that any growing child should. “She takes care of her hearing aid, like any kid with glasses would do, she just puts it on and goes about her business, says her mom proudly. She even has different ribbons for different outfits. When you give to the United Way, you invest in keeping the doors open for 38 programs at our 30 partner agencies. Because of you, Cassidy can hear her mom say I love you and don't forget your lunch. And that's what matters.
